Objective: We investigated whether administering the lactic acid bacteria Lactococcus lactis strain Plasma (LC-Plasma) can improve office workers’ performance and physical condition. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to take the test sample (LC-Plasma-containing yogurt beverage) in intake and non-intake periods (each lasting 4 weeks). A 4-week washout period was set between the two periods. Assessment was conducted using the World Health Organization Health and Work Performance Questionnaire (HPQ) and Profile of Mood States (POMS) and physical condition questionnaires. Results: We subjected 153 subjects to analysis. Absolute presenteeism with HPQ and vigor with POMS were significantly higher in the intake than non-intake period. Subjective physical status regarding typical common cold symptoms was also superior with LC-Plasma intake. Conclusions: Our results suggest that LC-Plasma improves work performance by reducing the risk of infection.
